The Very Hungry Caterpillar: Day Four

We had another gorgeous summer day here so we spent most of it outside. Lots of time for walks around the park and playing on the playground! Although we did have a lot of fun wrapping ourselves in “Cocoons” while we waited for our little sister to wake up this morning. The kids loved having me wrap them up tight in our brown blanket and bursting their way out! Plus we played lots of peekaboo and one of our old favorites “dark” where we all just sit under a blanket and go “ooo its dark” (don’t ask me why but this has been a favorite and much requested game for about a year and a half).

Today during our walk we collected some leaves so that we could make our very own Hungry Caterpillar eggs to put on them. I let them pick out a few leaves as we touched and talked about different feeling leaves – smooth like we have here, prickly pine needles, crunchy leaves and soft flowers. We brought their chosen ones home and then for the eggs we just practiced ripping some paper (usually after Mom got it started) and crumpling it up into eggs.

We also painted a paper plate, cut out a whole for the mouth and made a game of feed the caterpillar by giving some of our felt play food to the VERY hungry caterpillar! I cut out the eyes, nose and antennae and just let my daughter “glue” it to the plate using the wet paint. As my three get into the threes & fours I’ll let them do a little more of the cutting, but for now I’m going to let them stick with  “no wanna touch scissors sharp” as my two year old likes to say.

I had envisioned us making some little caterpillars today too using popsicle sticks that we colored in or painted and some pipe cleaners but it was just too nice to stay inside. All in all I’m pretty happy with our Very Hungry Caterpillar activities for the day and we were plenty busy so just didn’t need to do anymore!
