While we are taking preschool home this year due to COVID I wanted to incorporate some fun sensory bin ideas. One thing I had yet to try with my kids was pluffle – an awesome sensory activity, that is some kind of cross between sand and goop without all the mess. It moves on its own much the way goop would, but is sculpt-able the same way kinetic sand is, without sticking to everyones hands.

We loaded up our bin with black and orange pluffle just in time for Halloween and once the kids had thoroughly explored just the pluffle I made a few simple additions and expanded it even further.

To expand it we started out with this awesome sensory tool set and cauldrons making our very own halloween stew.

On another rainy afternoon I added some pumpkin erasers and had the kids try to find and return the pumpkins to the pumpkin patch!

The kids really enjoyed digging their hands in and watching how the pluffle reacted to different pressure which kept them engaged, but while they were playing and having fun there was also some great learning going on. Everything from practical skills like scooping & pouring (yay for less mess at breakfast!) to educational skills like counting out pumpkins and social skills like sharing and cooperation. Not to mention all the fine motor work involved. It’s amazing how something so simple and fun can keep them up to speed as we continue to get ready for Kindergarten while staying at home!
