One lesson I’ve learned being a mom is don’t waste your money on toys. My steadfast rule if I’m just looking around is nothing over $10 (I know it sounds cheap) and even then it has to be really worth it.  And my kids are very well stocked! Of course we get bigger stuff for their birthdays, holidays etc. and they have some very generous loved ones, but I find most of the expensive toys (unless they are a big ticket item) just don’t pan out.

In fact many of my kids favorite toys are the ones you make at home.

This morning my kids played with ONE thing from breakfast until nap. Two empty diaper boxes (Huggies overnights to be exact) tied together with some leftover twine. We had rides with mommy and daddy, sang the train song, waited on the stairs at the train station, went under a pillow tunnel and when mommy and daddy got tired pulled around our animal train all by ourselves. Even Blankie got a ride.

Pure Joy.

Total Cost:

100% Free thank you very much. (If you really insist it actually cost me about $52, diapers included, the same price as our activity cube that we used for about ten minutes).

We even topped it off by reading a train book before nap-time because when your kids play with a box all morning you can be just that coordinated as a parent.
