Seasons – Spring

Spring! The air is new, the world is fresh, the rain is pouring down – while it’s not spring here I had a hard time convincing my kids of that with all this rain. We barely left the house! But we had so much fun learning about spring and doing tons of fun spring activities!

We continued our season themed nature letters using flower petals and some contact paper to create the first letters of each kids name (for older kids they can use glue instead of contact paper – just outline the letter and let them fill it in). I cut out a square and then cut out the letters for each kid, put the contact paper on so that the hole was sticky and let them stick all the petals to it, then I tapped another square on top to keep everything in. They are so easy for the kids to make and turn out so nice looking I’m thinking they might be a permanent addition to their room decor!

While they were working I decided to see where they were with color matching which is a skill we’ve been vaguely talking about (i.e. “this is yellow just like your shirt – they’re the same”). I quickly created this flower with a pen & markers and once they had finished their petal letters I asked them to use the leftover petals to match the colors on the flower (I showed them an example to start “see how this petal is purple, I’ll put it on the purple spot”) while they quickly began putting the petals on the spots we needed some help remembering to look at what color the petal was before putting it on. My two year old was able to do this with that simple reminder while my younger two continued to just put the petals on the paper – pretty much where I’d expect them to be at this point, but it was a nice way to begin the concept! Once they understand colors better it will be fun to extend this into pattern making/following – Maybe in the spring when we have lots more flowers to work with, but for now we’ll keep finding ways to work on matching.

As we talked and read about spring and all the new life and gardens that begin to grow we saw a lot of worms and ladybugs and as luck would have it I had some left over red & black felt from a previous Halloween project! The kids have really been into this 10 Little Lady Bugs book they have so they were really excited to create their own ladybugs! I cut them each out a ladybug shape and a few circles and they were able to peel the backing off (with a little help from mom for the youngest) and stick the ladybug “spots” on wherever they liked! Originally I was going to just draw some eyes on but saw these sticky googly eyes (for pumpkin decorating) when we were at the store and they seemed like just the thing. Plus the kids could stick them on themselves. This would be a great activity to expand on when they get a little older by having them make lady bugs with one spot, two spots, three spots etc. to work on some very beginning math concepts. Even now though my two year old enjoys counting them and telling me how we made 1,2,3 ladybugs!

We decided to make our very own garden and added some flowers – cutting a circle out of a delivery container (cardboard would work great here too!) and painting some clothespins to be our flower petals! Once they dried the kids got to work on their fine motor skills some more as they squeezed the clothespins to attach them to the circle. This was really a challenge for them but with some guidance we are improving a lot!  We added a pipe cleaner to the back and voila! Ladybugs & Flowers ready to go we continued to talk about how flowers grow with the most adorable little feltbox garden – we had little packets of seeds and then pushed the flowers into the dirt. I bought this one, but its something you could easily make with some felt and popsicles sticks if you had the time for it.

We finished off our Spring activities by painting some raindrops and cloudy days! Very simple activities just a little bit of paint and imagination! For raindrops I just cut out a teardrop shape and gave them some blue paint to cover it with – all three could get in on this one! When the bigger kids finished quickly I gave them some paper and added some gray too for them to make clouds & rain. Can’t wait until they are all walking next spring so we can get some rain boots and go splashing around!!

Thanks for following along as we continue our seasons week! Be sure to check back soon for our Summer fun and if you haven’t yet check out all our Fall & Winter activities!
