Road Tripping with Babies 101

Getting ready for the summer? Trying to figure out summer plans? We’ve got a busy few months ahead that I am thrilled about! We love traveling and while adding kids into the mix really changed our trip planning from “Hey, want to drive to Kentucky this weekend?” to planning week long trips several weeks ahead we still enjoy the time and adventure as a family.

The summer excitement starts with my brother’s wedding – I can’t believe he’s getting married in just over a week! We’ll be making a vacation of it spending a week in a little pool side cottage and having a few solid beach days with the babes! July entails my son’s 2nd birthday and a short trip to meet Elmo at Sesame Place! This will either be amazing or a hot mess as we completely throw off their nap schedules, but it can’t hurt to try right?

If all goes well we will be rounding out our summer with a cross country road trip- this one is a little tbd as we wait on DCF for what feels like an eternity to finalize our adoption plans. I know this kind of road trip probably sounds insane to many of you but it is the thing I’m most looking forward to this year! Hear me out on the why below and I’ll follow up with an article on how we do it for those of you who are interested!

Why Drive?

It’s a question people always ask me (while looking at me like I have three heads). For one its way less pressure. No lines, no security, no long flight delays with cranky babies – sign me up. But even without all that I LOVE road tripping with my kids. I can take as many extra outfits as I want, bring their own pack and plays (pack n plays? does anyone really know?) and sheets which smell like home (to help them sleep better). Not only do they sleep better with the familiar objects and smells but it just feels cleaner then some crib a ton of random babies have chewed or possibly pooped on. I can bring easy high chairs like our bumbo with a tray or clip on chairs to make eating out or in the hotel room much easier. Don’t believe me? Try eating spaghetti while holding a squirmy baby or toddler in your lap and feeding them at the same time! Plus I can bring along all the diapers and wipes we’ll need rather then buying them at our destination. Basically I can load the car up rather then stressing about what we may want or need or be able to find at our destination.

Aside from all the extras we bring along we get to see so much more when we drive. We can stop and take in sights along the way and spend more quality time as a family. We can also travel as a family unit versus needing to have an extra adult when we fly (you know incase Grandma wants some time off from us). Depending on where we are going we’ll also get to stop in and see friends or family along the way who otherwise wouldn’t get to meet our babies or get to see them in different stages which to me is well worth the extra travel days.

We are road trippers – it’s just our jam & being on the road is a great time for us to talk, hang out and reconnect as a couple and as a family. So HOW do we do it you ask? Check out the next post here for my five steps to road trip success!
