Music Week: Day One Songs

I find that we often get into song ruts in this house – even though as a friend of mine told me recently I “have a song for everything.” And it’s true I pretty much do have a song for everything from eating to driving to playing play doh – and will often get asked advice for songs from parents who are struggling to do something (like put their seat belt on). Even with all these songs kicking around in my head I find that I will do the same set of songs for a while forgetting about certain ones until they suddenly strike back up. They come and go but we tend to do a lot over and over.

Since we are doing our music week here I thought I’d share just a few of our favorite songs – maybe ones you knew as kids but have long forgotten or maybe newer ones to add into your repertoire! Most of the lyrics or versions I’ve given are just how I remember them or sing them but there are likely many versions so you may know something different!

The Elevator Song –

Our current favorite is the elevator song which we learned from our library group it goes to the tune of do your ears hang low and the kids love to sing it!

The Fire Truck Song –

Hurry, hurry drive the fire truck (Sing fast & Pretend to be driving)
Hurry, hurry drive the fire truck
Hurry, hurry drive the fire truck
Ding, Ding, Ding, Ding, Ding

Hurry, hurry turn the corner (Tilt your body toward the curve)
Hurry, hurry turn the corner
Hurry, hurry turn the corner
Ding, Ding, Ding, Ding, Ding

Hurry, hurry climb the ladder (Mime climbing a ladder)
Hurry, hurry climb the ladder
Hurry, hurry climb the ladder
Ding, Ding, Ding, Ding, Ding

Hurry, hurry spray the water (Pretend you have a hose)
Hurry, hurry spray the water
Hurry, hurry spray the water
Ding, Ding, Ding, Ding, Ding

Slowly, slowly back to the station (Slow it down to calm those babies back down here)
Slowly, slowly back to the station
Slowly, slowly back to the station
Ding, Ding, Ding, - Ding, - Ding

The Gorilla Song –

Anything with a pet gorilla is sure to be a big hit in our house! Plus even our 10 month old can sing along for this one “AHH AHH AHH”

We only do verse 1 and sing it much slower but here is the full/original version!

My Bonnie Lies Over The Ocean –

(Bonnie is mostly changed to my kids own names because its much more fun!)

My Bonnie lies over the ocean
My Bonnie lies over the sea
My Bonnie lies over the ocean
So bring back my bonnie to me, to me
Bring back
Bring back
Oh bring back my Bonnie to me

Baby Beluga –

A Raffi Classic and pretty much constant request in our house. “BELULLA” is a favorite whether played or sung!

Little Teapot –

I'm a little teapot short and stout
Here is my handle (bend arm at hip into handle)
Here is my spout (bend arm up into spout)
When I get all steamed up hear me shout
Tip me over and pour me out! (tilt your body over)

Trot, Trot To Boston –

This is one we all always knew but apparently is not very well known outside of New England.

Trot, Trot to Boston (Bouncing on your lap)
Trot, Trot to Lynn
Watch out (baby name) you might fall in! (Tip them upside-down)

Trot, Trot to London (Bouncing on your lap)
Trot, Trot to Dover
Better watch out or you might fall over! (Tip them sideways)

Zoom Zoom to the Moon –

My babes love this song, especially if you throw them in the air for blast off! We start the countdown at 5 (because babies) and also do different verses like Fun Fun to the Sun and Far Far to the Star!

Itsy Bitsy Spider –

The itsy bitsy spider goes up the water spout
Down came the rain and washed the spider out
Out came the sun and dried up all the rain
And the itsy bitsy spider went up the spout again

We also sub in the “big gigantic spider” and do a loud deep voice and wide arms

Or my son’s winter favorite the “New England spider” who gets knocked out by the snow which may never melt!

Tiny Turtle –

Okay my kids really love this song – its great in the bathtub,  in playing with their stuffed turtle and we are always down for some good eating sounds. This video however is terrifying, but I can’t figure out its copyright so let’s agree to let youtube be the determining factor on that one…

Sunshine –

This is a #1 bedtime request – so much love. Again we only do verse 1 and often replace sunshine with a child’s name.

Bingo –

There was a farmer had a dog
And Bingo was his name-o
B-I-N-G-O, B-I-N-G-O, B-I-N-G-O
And Bingo was his name-o

There was a farmer had a dog
And Bingo was his name-o
Clap-I-N-G-O, Clap-I-N-G-O, Clap-I-N-G-O
And Bingo was his name-o

There was a farmer had a dog
And Bingo was his name-o
Clap-Clap-N-G-O, Clap-Clap-N-G-O, Clap-Clap-N-G-O
And Bingo was his name-o

There was a farmer had a dog
And Bingo was his name-o
Clap-Clap-Clap-G-O, Clap-Clap-Clap-G-O, Clap-Clap-Clap-G-O
And Bingo was his name-o

There was a farmer had a dog
And Bingo was his name-o
Clap-Clap-Clap-Clap-O, Clap-Clap-Clap-Clap-O, Clap-Clap-Clap-Clap-O
And Bingo was his name-o

There was a farmer had a dog
And Bingo was his name-o
Clap-Clap-Clap-Clap-Clap, Clap-Clap-Clap-Clap-Clap, Clap-Clap-Clap-Clap-Clap
And Bingo was his name-o

If You’re Happy and You Know It –

I’m sure most of you know the three classics clap hands, stomp feet, shout hooray but we also like to add in our own!

If you're happy and you know it
Boop your nose (boop boop)
If you're happy and you know it
Boop your nose (boop boop)
If you're happy and you know it
And you really wanna show it
If you're happy and you know it
Boop your nose (boop boop)

We’ve also got rub your belly, tap your head, wiggle your ears, clap your feet etc. etc.

Bringing Home a Baby Bumble Bee:

This one includes what I refer to as the PC version (i.e. what I used at work) and the not so PC version (i.e. the fun one I do with my own kids) though both are very kid friendly!

PC Version:

I'm bringing home a baby bumblebee (cup hands like your holding a bug inside)
Won't my Mommy be so proud of me
I'm bringing home a baby bumblebee
OWCH! It stung me! (make a big face here)

I'm squishing up my baby bumblebee (rub hands together like squishing playdoh)
Won't my Mommy be so proud of me
I'm squishing up my baby bumblebee
EWWWW! What a mess! (big stinky face and show off your messy hands!)

I'm washing off my baby bumblebee (rub hands like scrubbing them with soap)
Won't my Mommy be so proud of me
I'm washing off my baby bumblebee
All Done! All Better!

And then of course the fun version - which if you're really into the yulky can loop over and over at the end

Starts off the same:

I'm bringing home a baby bumblebee (cup hands like your holding a bug inside)
Won't my Mommy be so proud of me
I'm bringing home a baby bumblebee
OWCH! It stung me! (make a big face here)

I'm squishing up my baby bumblebee (rub hands together like squishing playdoh)
Won't my Mommy be so proud of me
I'm squishing up my baby bumblebee
EWWWW! What a mess! (big stinky face and show off your messy hands!)

I'm licking up my baby bumblebee (swipe hand by mouth - don't forget your best slurping sound)
Won't my Mommy be so proud of me
I'm licking up my baby bumblebee
UHHHH I Don't feel so good! (rub belly)

I'm throwing up my baby bumblebee (vomit sounds)
Won't my Mommy be so proud of me
I'm throwing up my baby bumblebee

(To End It) All Done, All Better

(To Loop It) What a mess! (Repeat licking verse)

and of course….

Wagon Wheel!!
