Full Body Learning

Materials Needed: CHALK

With remote learning/homeschooling in full swing this September we’ve taken on the 1000 Hours Outside Challenge to push ourselves to spend time in nature and well, out of our house. Being outside however doesn’t mean the learning needs to stop. In fact it’s a great opportunity to get our whole bodies energetically involved in the process.

As the weather begins to get a little cooler we are longing to head out around town to some of our favorite outdoor spots, but with so many restrictions still in effect finding lots of fun things we can do in our very own driveway instead.

Today we started off with a letter scavenger hunt! This is a great way to get kids active and learning at the same time which has been proven to help their memory of any subject! I went out with a piece of chalk and drew letters in various spots all over our driveway and walkway – in no particular order. I then had the kids come out for our scavenger hunt giving each one a letter to find! We easily adjusted this to sight words for our oldest who is pretty solid on letters already and sent them off in every direction.

Once we had taken turns finding lots of different letters we started at one end of the driveway yelled out a letter and an action like “hop” then hopped our way to it. This could easily have turned into a racing game but we had fun hopping, tiptoeing, running, and skipping our way all together.

After a few rounds up and down the driveway we continued the activity by giving each kiddo a piece of chalk and having them draw a few of the sight words – I.E. everyone find the word cat and draw a picture of a cat around it. They loved doing their own artwork and making associations with each word. While none of them particularly looked like anything they were super proud to show each word and what they had drawn.

We then finished our “learning” time with a little bit of fun. I traced each kids body with the chalk and they had a blast coloring themselves in!

All in all not a bad way to spend a couple of hours outside at our own house (and off screens)!
