Babies & Snow Days

In honor of our first snow fall this winter I thought I’d share an article I wrote last year about surviving all the snow storms with the little babies. While my three are now big enough to stomp around in the snow this is still great fun for those cold blustery days when you just can’t bare to be outside!

This winter I’ve been couped up in the house for several snow days. While going out in the snow with your kids is basically a built in playground – I’ve got non-walkers and who wants to lug babies around or just literally lay out in the snow?? So instead of bundling them up and trying to drag them outside I brought the snow to them.

They have never had so much fun! First thing I did was gather up a few plastic spoons from our recent take out orders as well as some play kitchen tools we had lying around (I’m sure regular silverware or kid friendly cookware would work great too). I took one of my big baking sheets out our front door, scooped up a big pile of snow and brought it right into the kitchen for the kids.

This was such a hit we tried it another day with a large mixing bowl. Put it down on some paper-towels to somewhat contain the melting snow – there will still be water but we played on the tile floor so it wasn’t too worrisome. And voila – almost an hour of entertainment while they made snowballs, pretended to cook, practiced scooping with spoons and dumping from cups! Even just making observations on the melting snow. I will definitely try some variations on this as they get bigger – hiding plastic animals or cars in the snow or even a pinch of food coloring for fun colors! This could even be a great activity for an older kid who is sick on a snowy day and missing out on the fun outside – or simply saved for a day that’s too busy or too miserable to actually take the kids outside.

Any other ideas? Please share them below!
