To TV or Not to TV (with Baby)

For a long time we were a very strict no TV household when it came to our three babies. They just didn’t need it! They can play and read and hang out with us and we love every minute of it. They don’t go on phones or tablets either except to take or look at pictures or very occasionally listen to a song. When we go out to eat they are content to sit with us or a small toy and we were always very happy with that.

That is until the whole family got a stomach bug. I’m talking buckets by everyone’s bed. Babies vomiting, parents feeling like crap – no way were we letting them run around the house and keeping up with the usual chaos of three under two. So we thought let’s all relax and watch a movie! That way everyone can get some rest and the kids will be entertained. But here’s the catch – our kids didn’t know how to watch tv. They didn’t know how to sit and watch a movie and frankly weren’t all that interested. Not in Elmo, not in Frozen, not in any kids show we could try. They might watch for about a minute and then they just wanted to get down and play. So in our stomach bug induced state this was not going well.

So while we still think our kids are pretty young for TV and would rather they not watch it – we do occasionally now try to instate a family “movie” night where we all sit around together and watch an episode of Llama Llama or part of Moana. Purely for the day that we all get sick again and need to know how to watch tv. Bet you never thought you’d have to teach a kid that!
