Living Waste Free: Steps in a Long Journey

So as you may have read in my last post by no means are we a waste free household. Don’t get me wrong I LOVE the idea and think there’s some amazing stuff out there, but with three under two it’s just not feasible or realistic for me right now. I spend hours already getting food and bodily functions out of clothes – I can’t imagine trying to deal with non-disposable diapers (huge kudos to you who do).

However,  I do try to do some things like bring a reusable cup or reusable bags (plus some stores give you a discount woohoo!) and add to this list wherever I can. I really love to peruse blogs related to sustainable living for ideas on friendly-er (i.e. food safe or at least non poisonous) cleaners. This is especially great in my house since we have a lot of mouthing – or should I say basically everything in somebody’s mouth at sometime or another. We are all teething all the time so I guess it can’t be helped, but sometimes it just seems like the mouthing will never end! Case in point my kids were taking turns licking the banisters the other day… I figure it doesn’t do much good trying to give them all this pesticide-free, healthy food to eat if they are just licking all those lab chemicals off my table whenever I clean it.

I also love checking out sustainable sites for healthier recipes! I mean really who wants to give your kids loads of sugar, corn syrup, and random ‘food’ stuff (that I’m not even sure what it is) wrapped in plastic, if there’s a simple, healthy alternative!? Did you know blending a small amount of spinach into frosting will make a gorgeous green frosting without using a drop of food dye? We had so much fun doing this for my sons smash cake on his first birthday and believe me we all tried it and couldn’t taste the spinach one bit.

This week we’ve been enjoying this awesome recipe from Living Unwrapped for chocolate avocado pudding! Goodbye pudding cups, Acesulfame and yellow 5/6! Yeah, those are food ingredients…  But this avocado pudding – I can tell you from experience its sooo easy to make and check out how pudding(-y) it looks!

Except for that tiny green bit I failed to mix in it’s totally chocolate pudding!

My kids love it and they don’t know the difference – so why not give them something worth eating?
