Corn Three Ways

We had so much fun husking corn during our Fall activities that I thought creating our own corn would make a fun thanksgiving project! I just couldn’t decide which would be the best way to do it so we tried corn three different ways!

The first one was definitely the best for my youngest little one. I cut out contact paper and added the husks (or leaves) then let the kids use our yellow pompoms to make the corn kernels simply sticking them to the contact paper! Great fine motor practice as we needed to use those pincer grasps but all around just a fun project they could all partake in and learn to share the materials by taking one pompom at a time.

This was definitely the most fun one to do as we had more materials we were familiar with and less exploration/mess to deal with. Again I cut out the paper and leaves so they could see what they were trying to make and then took out all our yellow art supplies – markers, crayons & dot art and let them make their corn. If you’ve got bigger kids let them do the cut out work themselves too! My babies really enjoyed this one the most and put the most effort into these. Plus I love the way the dot art looks like pieces of corn! They also were pretty good (with some language modeling from Mama) at asking to “trade” with whoever had the art material they wanted and worked on either agreeing or saying “I’m still using it” or “one minute” which was a bit advanced but the older two picked up on pretty well!

The last one was just a matter of connivence – we had some yellow tissue paper in a gift bag that we received and the kids started ripping it up so I got a little bowl and we all ripped it up and put our pieces of corn in the bowl. Then I let them glue it on the paper and cut out some leaves for them to glue on too! My oldest got really into this and was crumpling the pieces up to make little corn shapes and sticking them on while the others just wanted to play with the glue. But all in all they had fun and tried out some new arts and crafts so it was well worth it!

I know we spent this week making all this corn, but don’t worry the turkeys are coming too! Wouldn’t be thanksgiving without at least one.  We’ll keep working on little mini projects like these while they learn how to use different materials and develop their skills, but I’m so excited for the day they start coming up with ideas of their own to create!
