Beach Days

We are just coming off our vacation high and I’m not sure if the laundry will ever end, but I’m giving myself a quick break to check in with you all about beach time with the babies. With summer in full swing and July 4th coming up here in the States I’m sure many will be at least thinking about hitting the beach over the next few weeks if not already spending long lazy days camped out with the littles. While we all now know to be careful about the sun and vigilant about water safety there are still some benefits to beach days that can get wrapped up in all the fun.

Did you know that playing in the sand was great for fine motor skills? Things like scooping, dumping, stirring and raking sand are also great ways to work on self feeding skills whether you’re getting them ready to spoon feed or pour cereal for themselves! If your kids aren’t that into spending their day digging in the sand you can encourage them by burying toy dinosaurs or animals for them to dig up! Or engage your older kids pretend play skills by going on a dinosaur expedition! Whatever it is they love just go for it and encourage them to play around and have fun. While our oldest was more into collecting rocks to throw into the water our middle child could have spent the whole day flinging sand, digging and pouring from bucket to bucket. We let her get as messy as she liked and she loved being swung around in the waves at the end of our day to rinse all the sand off! Plus when she went to drink the milk out of her cereal this morning it didn’t end up on top of her head! I can only think all the practice must’ve helped somewhat.

This works great with sand, but you can also do similar play at home with water, dry beans, pasta, cereal or rice! Try out different textures to learn velocity basics from a very young age! They’ll have a blast just exploring different sensory experiences which is also great for helping picky eaters or kids who don’t like different textures without making it feel like work!
